Herpes simplex virus infection (Cold Sores)
Herpes simplex virus (HSV) can cause an infection that appears as small clear fluid blisters in a limited area on the skin or mucous membranes. Colloquially called this the "herpes". There are two types of viruses: type 1 (Cold Sores) is the most common cause of cold sores (herpes labialis) and type 2 is usually the cause of genital herpes (genital herpes).
HSV1 (Cold Sores) is found in blisters around the mouth, and herpes transfers typically from person-to-person by direct skin or mucosal contact, such as by kissing or sexual contact. In rare cases, infections occur from mother to child during birth.
Herpes Cold sores
Herpes Cold Sores (Herpes labialis) is typically represented by sores on the lips. Upper respiratory tract infections, dryness of the lips, strong sunlight and stress are some of the factors that can put an outbreak started.
The first infection with HSV, either type 1 or type 2 is called a primary infection. After searching virus via nerve pathways to the nerve cell, the virus stays for life. Here the virus can lie dormant and undetected for the immune system, known as the latent stage. At the reactivation of the virus can be new fluid bladders, for example in the form of "cold sores". The number and nature of these reactivation are highly variable, but both volume and frequency typically declines with time. More significant reactivation occur in patients with weakened immune systems.
You can not tell the difference between an outbreak caused by a primary infection or reactivation, as both forms may be no visible symptoms, the virus can be excreted from saliva or secretions from the genitals, outside there are blisters or ulcers. Herpes infection is very common and about 80% of the adult US population has antibodies to HSV (Cold Sores). Most individuals with antibodies against type 1 are infected during the first five years of life.
